Come to Naxos

One of us grew up in Galway, the other in a village on Naxos, and we have spent eight years meeting each other in airports. On the third of October we are gathering everyone we love in one place to put a stop to it.

~ days until the olive grove ~

Saturday, 3 October

How the day unfolds

Ceremony

5:00 PM

The Olive Grove

Vows in two languages, with the sea just visible through the trees.

Drinks

6:00 PM

The Terrace

Ouzo, Guinness and mezze while the light turns gold.

Dinner

7:30 PM

The Long Table

One table, all of us along it, lamb from the village and far too much bread.

Dancing

9:30 PM

The Courtyard

Greek first, Irish after midnight, both until the kitchen gives up.

What to Wear

Island formal

Island formal, and comfortable with it. The ceremony is in an olive grove on uneven ground, and October evenings on Naxos turn cool the moment the sun drops.

Olive Leaf
Oleander
Limestone
Terracotta
Wine Dark
Please do
Linen, cotton, anything that breathes
A wrap or a jacket for the evening
Flats or block heels for the grove
Please don't
Stilettos - the ground is stony and uneven
White or ivory, in any of its shades

Will You Come?

Please reply by mid-August, so we can count the table

Getting There

The questions we have been asked most

1

How do we get to Naxos?

Fly to Athens, then either the short hop to Naxos or the ferry from Piraeus, which takes about four hours and is by far the prettier way to arrive.

2

When should we come out?

For the weekend at least. Most of us land on the Thursday and stay through Sunday lunch, which is when the better stories tend to get told.

3

Where should we stay?

We have held rooms in Chalki and in Naxos town, twenty minutes apart. Details are in the envelope that came with this card.

4

Will we understand any of it?

The ceremony runs in both languages and nothing important happens without a translation. The dancing needs no explanation at all.

From the port at Naxos town, follow the road inland toward Chalki for roughly twenty minutes. The gate is a kilometre past the village on the left, marked by a white stone. Taxis are thin on the ground in October, so we are running minibuses from both Naxos town and Chalki.

The grove is a five-minute walk from the car park, over uneven ground.

How We Got Here

Eight years and a great many flights

2018

A rooftop in Lisbon

Both of us were meant to be somewhere else that week. We stayed up until it got light and missed our buses entirely.

2019

Galway, then Naxos

Nikos met the family at a very wet October wedding. Siobhán met his at Easter, and was fed for four days without pause.

2021

One flat, at last

Dublin, third floor, no lift, and a kitchen that smelled of oregano from the first week onward.

2024

The question

Asked at the rail of the ferry back from Naxos, somewhere off Paros. The answer arrived before the sentence had finished.

2026

The third of October

Both families on one island at the same time. We are still not certain the island is ready.

Gifts

Getting yourself here is gift enough

1

The Flights Home

Toward seeing both families more than twice a year.

2

The Old House

Nikos's grandmother's place in the village needs a roof, and we would like to keep it standing.

3

A Gift That Isn't Ours

A donation in your name to the lifeboat crews who look after both our coastlines.

Come for the wedding. Stay for the week.
