We met on the heath as children and never quite came back. On the sixteenth of January we are making it official, in a stone hall with the wind at the windows and the fire lit early. Bring your warmest coat and your loudest laugh.

Formal, but warm. January up here is beautiful and merciless, and there is a short walk over open ground between the chapel and the hall.

The practical things
The lane above Haworth is single-track and unlit, so cars are best left in the village. Our minibus runs the last mile from The Black Bull every twenty minutes from two o'clock.
Cold. There is about four minutes of open ground between the chapel and the hall, and the wind does not negotiate. Coats are taken at the door and blankets are waiting inside.
Please do. There is a quiet room off the hall with beds made up for the little ones once the dancing starts.
We have held rooms at The Black Bull and the White Lion in the village. Mention our names when you book.

From Keighley, follow the A629 and turn off at Cross Roads for Haworth. The village car park sits at the foot of Main Street. The lane beyond it is single-track, unlit and unkind to low cars, so please leave yours below and let us carry you the last mile.

The walk from the chapel to the hall is four minutes over open ground.
In five weathers
2011
Nine and ten years old, sent out of doors and left to our own devices. We walked to the top, decided we belonged to the place, and quietly decided the rest of it too.
2018
Catherine went south for work and Heathcliff stayed north. Three years of long letters, later phone calls, and trains booked the moment payday landed.
2021
A cottage at the edge of the village with a bad roof, a good hearth, and the tops framed in the kitchen window.
2024
Asked on the walk up to Top Withens, in weather no reasonable person would go out in. The answer took no time at all.
2027
And now the whole business becomes official, with every one of you watching.

The cottage still lets the weather in at the north corner. Slate is not romantic, but it is honest.
